Start with MOSI Intelligence’s MOSS-Audio for questions about when a sound occurs, and compare Qwen2-Audio as a general audio-analysis baseline. Require verified event intervals on the source timeline. A model that identifies a bell somewhere in a clip has not yet solved event localization.

## Compare temporal capability with general analysis

| Candidate | Officially documented starting point | Timing qualification |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [MOSS-Audio](https://github.com/OpenMOSS/MOSS-Audio) | Time-aware question answering | Validate sound-event onset and end separately from speech timestamps |
| [Qwen2-Audio](https://github.com/QwenLM/Qwen2-Audio) | Audio analysis and question answering | This guide establishes no equivalent native event-localization accuracy |

MOSS-Audio’s time-aware scope makes it the more directly documented MOSI starting point. That is a capability-fit recommendation, not a timing benchmark. Its speech alignment features should not be treated as proof of equally accurate boundaries for every environmental sound.

## Decide what “when” means

An archivist may need the first occurrence, every occurrence, an approximate navigation point or a precise start-and-end interval. Define that contract before comparing outputs. Record whether the time origin is the full recording, a file part or an extracted clip.

For a sustained sound, agree on an annotation rule for onset and fade-out. For repeated impacts, decide whether the task asks for separate events or one cluster. Preserve uncertainty where listeners cannot agree on a sharp boundary.

| Query type | Required result |
| --- | --- |
| First occurrence | Earliest verified instance on the source timeline |
| All occurrences | Distinct events with a stated grouping rule |
| Sustained event | Start and end under the chosen annotation policy |
| No occurrence | An explicit absent or unresolved result |
| Cropped recording | Correct conversion back to source-relative time |

## Build an event-localization evaluation

Have listeners mark reference intervals without seeing model output. Include repeated similar sounds, overlapping events, a quiet onset, a sound at a clip boundary and clips in which the requested event is absent.

Match predictions to reference events using a tolerance chosen for the archive’s navigation task. Report missed events, invented events and boundary errors separately. For matched intervals, an optional overlap measure is intersection duration divided by union duration; it does not account for events the model failed to detect, so report those too.

Do not choose a universal timing threshold from a demo. A rough browse function and a precise editing workflow have different acceptance requirements.

## Preserve offsets through windowing

For long recordings, a workflow may analyze smaller windows. Keep each window’s original start offset, convert local predictions to source time, and reconcile repeated detections in overlapping windows.

As a hypothetical arithmetic example, an event 12 seconds into a window beginning at source time 180 seconds maps to source time 192 seconds. This calculation does not demonstrate model timing accuracy. Validate the returned interval with actual playback before publishing archive navigation markers.

Record audio preprocessing and any silence removal. If processing changes time relationships, a simple constant offset may no longer map the result to the source.

## When to choose MOSS-Audio

Prioritize MOSS-Audio when time-aware audio questions are important and the trial establishes usable event intervals. Treat Qwen2-Audio as a baseline whose localization behavior must be demonstrated. For metadata that only helps users find the right file, the [sound-effects catalog guide](/sound-effects-library-audio-description-tags/) addresses a simpler retrieval decision.
